What’s on the Horizon?
Jul 11th, 2009 by Cathy Jo Nelson
Wow it is really hard to believe that summer is slipping away. I’ll begin work in my new digs the first Monday in August. I decided to clean out my calendar of dates related to my last job (one I will fondly miss!!) as I prepare to be new yet again. Sigh.
What’s difficult is going in the first week to outline the dates I need to be off–of course all for professional development. So where am I trying to go?
- School Library Journal Summit 2009
Washington, DC, October 2-3, 2009
Yes, I’m invited again this year! Best, even more so than last year, I’ll be involved in the program in a behind the scenes like manner, as my friend Buffy Hamilton and I, the so-called “Tech Mavens” of the SLJ Summit, will work with Rocco Staino, a contributing editor to the School Library Journal, who wants us to to add a technical dimension to the summit. We are even being assigned some library students to be our “technical posse.” This will be my second formal invitation to attend and participate! What an honor! - SC EdTech 2009
Myrtle Beach, SC, October 14-16, 2009
As a past board member, and now planning committee member, I am excited to know that this year’s keynote speaker is one I recommended! I may not attend the full conference this year, skiping preconference all together, but since I nominated the keynote (who is a friend in my PLN) I MUST go! I’ll help with the registration and volunteer area, which has been my contribution at conference, and hob nob with local members of my PLN. Who is that keynoter? Can’t say yet–that info has not been publicly released. But I just HAVE to go! I have not submitted a proposal to present–still haven’t decided on anything in particular yet. I have some ideas, just not sure I should. - Amercan Association of School Librarians Annual Conference 2009
Charlotte, NC, November 5-7, 2009
I have been tapped to serve on an AASL Technology Team along with many others in my PLN (Buffy Hamilton, Joyce Valenza, Francey Harris, Doug Johnson, Rob Darrow, Alice Yucht, Diane Chen…this list goes on with many names. I will also particpate in a School Library 2.0 Smackdown again just like the one at NECC09, but I am not sure who else is in this–just the Joyce Valenza is organizing a front of folks who can speak to using tools in a school setting succsefully.
So you can see that I have a full plate already for some of October and early November. And I stil have a library program to become acclimated to and implement/update programs as needed.

Looks like you will need to keep a suitcase packed this fall! Hope you learn lots of great things at the Summit and EdTech to share (and you have me wondering who that keynote speaker is!). I’ll be looking forward to seeing you in Charlotte for the AASL conference.
