December reflections
Dec 6th, 2008 by Cathy Jo Nelson
Is it too early? Looking back at my goals for 2008 here, I didn’t do too bad.
- Goal 1: Brevity; Status: Failed miserably! I thought I would make posts
less wordy, but as I review, I didn’t make them less wordy at all! But I did learn a better way to give them readability. Chunked with subheadings has helped immensely. I must credit Sue Waters over at The Edublogger for this fantastic tip. Actually I use all five of her great tips, and can vouch for their effectiveness in blogging. Sue, you are my hero.
- Goal 2: Relocate Blog; Status: Accomplished! Thanks again Chris Craft for assisting me in setting up shop on my own domain.
- Goal 3: Video; Status: Accomplished….somewhat. Okay so I did manage to figure out the green screen for the school studio, but not necessarily for any freelance stuff. I don’t want to be tied to the “studio.” So I still have some learning to do.
- Goal 4: Redesign; Status: Accomplished! My presentations this year have been filled with great images that relay my messages better than any words I could have put on a slide. I have mixed it up a bit each time by mixing in video where appropriate as well as guest speakers via Skype. Just adding these two have made my presentations stand out and be memorable. Oh and I’ve done the same in my instruction too. Of course I still have much to learn, but hey, despite any self criticism of my own work, overall, I still feel like I accomplished this one. I have also managed to enter into this mix interactivity–by either asking the attendees to bring a connected laptop or asking FOR laptops to be made available. Also I am integrating movement of some kind (get up and walk to someone you don’t know in this session and….). I am finding this adds a whole new dimension to engaging attendees/students (or giving them something else to do when they get bored, wink, wink!) Either way, I am happier and they seem happier.
Now it is time to plan more goals. One will be better proofreading skills–geesh my typos look a lot like spelling errors. Hmm. I dunno yet.

What can I say? I still struggle with length too if that helps and lets not even talk about proof reading. The other week I managed to change the name of Crappy Graphs to Crabby Graphs.
I am also near in reviewing some of my blogging history for one full year. I am very curious as to why you changed from the Blogger format to WordPress. You suggest that it has given you more independence. In what ways?
