One Tool at a Time: Pinterest
Feb 22nd, 2012 by Cathy Jo Nelson
Once a month we’ve been doing a PD spin off from the ISTE SIGMS series One Tool at a Time with teachers at our school. It’s all volunteer and done during planning periods. Some have opted to count it as their GBE (goals-based evaluation) where teachers set goals, work towards the goals, and then are assessed based on their own measure of progress depending on the goals. We have covered some really interesting topics, and often despite the title of our PD saying “one tool” more often than not we have covered two.
Pinterest is up!
This month’s installment will be just one tool–>Pinterest. My colibrarian Melanie Dillard and I decided at the beginning of February we should cover Pinterest and Twitter. Up to this point we were both committing time to present these tools together, but our library assistant was promoted, leaving a vacancy for that position in our library (which is being refilled soon, yay!!) With no “adult” to leave the library under care, the last time we did our “One Tool at a Time” only one of us (me) left to do our professional development. Tomorrow, Melanie will be heading over to our small tv studio/computer lab to lead our session.

I’m so excited about this one. I know it is going to be awesome! Best, I get to sit back and let my colibrarian, Melanie Dillard, take the lead on this one. I gave her what I had to offer. So I did make a small contribution. We did briefly talk about recording it, but decided ultimately we weren’t ready for that. I will share our handout later. I know Melanie is going to knock their socks off!!
Next month?
Next month? An introduction to educational uses of Twitter–featuring me. (But maybe it will be a co-effort again, as hopefully we will have our new assistant in place and ready to take charge with our being preoccupied with out 1T@T March session. )

Hi Cathy,
I’m so interested in reading about the educational uses of Pininterest-Do you plan on posting some of the lesson on your blog? I’m a graduate student in Virginia, majoring in ESL (M.Ed.). Part of my syllabus includes following your blog, and I’m learning a lot!

I’ve been so busy I’ve not had time to follow up on that, but I will. I do think there can be educational application to Pinterest. Will follow up sometime after April–I’ve got some conferences and professional obligations that are taking much of my free time right now. Thanks for following my blog.
