The folks at the Next conference put up a nice short(ish) excerpt of my talk on the Librarian Militant, Librarians Triumphant talk. It’s the last 12 minute conclusion:
Thanks for sharing David Lankes talk. His words about democracy and knowledge building really resonant with me. It started me thinking about a very heated conversation I had a few months back with my curriculum writing team. Each content area was sharing enduring understandings and I was sharing the ones I had developed for fourth grade information literacy. The understanding statement had the words libraries and intellectual freedom in it. Some members of my team questioned whether libraries did promote intellectual freedom. As I sat listening and participating in the debate, I felt my spirit being challenged. For me libraries are not about the place, but the people and the information that can be shared, learned, and enjoyed in the space.
