Cathy,
Fantastic post. Unfortunately, as a country we seem to be losing something that made us what we are: the recognition that it's the debate and discussion of controversial ideas that moves us forward in our human development as much as the outcomes of those debates and discussions. It's a shame we've become so overcome with tunnel vision that we deny our students opportunities to form opinions of their own. You make great points about the need for us to respect the professional opinions of our librarians.

Cathy, how do you know there was a reconsideration policy in place and adhered to? I'd love to know more.

I have learned writing this post that indeed a procedure was in place for a challenge by KCSD, and via their facebook page, the parent challenging the book was invited to complete the form to file a formal complaint. I have no knowledge of the dates of the said meeting to discuss the book. I find it satisfying to know the district had a policy and followed through with it. But I am still extremely disappointed that one parent has the leverage to get a book off a library shelf. I would love to see the minutes of the meeting. The action was way too swift. The parent was invited to file the complaint the morning of Thursday, June 23. I presume the meeting took place Monday, June 27, because at 10:23PM, Mr. Berry was celebrating his success at "fixing the system" and getting the book off the shelves in all KCSD schools. Here is his remark, copied from the KCSD Facebook page:

Thanks to Mr. Mathews and Dr. Slayman for meeting with me, the book is now off the shelves and now we fix the broke system that allowed it to get there. There are other folks that now need to answer some questions, it would help if they would self indentify and leave a message on my page, the folks that were on the panel for Summer reading books.
June 27 at 10:23pm

I am concerned with the threatening tone in which he says "there are other folks now need to answer....well you can go back and read it. His gloating tone here just turns my stomach. who appointed him the one to report to? I think his success has gone to his head.

Perhaps this should be another blog post? But I really need to let it go.
