Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the second largest school district in the country, plans to lay off a few dozen school librarians to meet budget cuts. They seemed to think that librarians were the easiest to do without. It's extremely sad to see these dedicated individuals lose their jobs. It is even more sad to realize that students will not have these priceless resources available to them for help on writing papers or learning how to properly research and use media.

I understand that it is definitely a time of change and redefining the role for librarians. I believe that it could be an exciting time, a time to create and expand, a time to look at new possibilities. Our librarian and computer teacher have crafted together an "Informational Technology Systems" program for the middle school students. They have worked together to create a program that explores research in the digital age. The projects the students have completed are amazing. Now as our computer teacher's role will be redefined it will be interesting to see what happens this upcoming year. Also, at our last faculty meeting, our librarian did a great prezi illustrating the different types of digital resources (Britannica, Bookflex and more) that she researched and had purchased for our school. These are just some of the things she does. I say this because, she is a person who is constantly recreating her role and redefining her job.

I wrote up a post about "you get what you give" and wanted to sit on it a day before posting it. Gonna post it after today's round on the listserv.

I hope this will spur people into action. I just asked for time at our next board meeting to share our Snapshot video and thank the board and DO for their continued support (i.e. keeping librarians). Also just started working on my big annual report. You are so right. We must save ourselves or at least do all that we can to try.
